(Phuket, Thailand, February 25, 2010) - Growing concern over Hong Kong’s pollution and air-quality is enhancing Phuket’s appeal as a place for cleaner living, families and a second-home destination.
Adding to RPM’s appeal for families is the proximity of leading international schools and healthcare facilities.
“Many of our investors and new residents are from Hong Kong, seeking a second home in a more amenable environment for their families” said Mr Lalvani. “Phuket is close enough for them to travel to regularly and with ease.”
Royal Phuket Marina (RPM) developer Gulu Lalvani attributes the sell-out success of his world class ‘luxury lifestyle community’ to affluent investors seeking a cleaner environment.
Nearly all 60+ penthouses and condominiums in the first phase of his residential marina were snapped-up by investors within three months of going on sale.
Latest air-quality figures between the two underline Phuket’s attraction.
Key pollution indicators of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are startlingly lower in Phuket than in Hong Kong, according to recent statistics from both Thailand’s air Quality Management Bureau and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Phuket’s average sulphur dioxide concentration registers at zero compared to 58 in Hong Kong.
Nitrogen dioxide concentration in Phuket registers 6, a fraction of Hong Kong’s level of 2236 – which is regarded as critical against the WHO standard.
Phuket’s ‘small dust’ reading is 31, against another ‘critical’ indicator in Hong Kong, of 114.
Phuket’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) rating is 39, more than three times healthier than Hong Kong, measured at 148.
A recent survey by ACNielsen on behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong also found 79 per cent of respondents expecting Hong Kong's attractiveness to foreign investors dropping given the current pollution trend.
More than half knew of fellow professionals refusing to relocate to Hong Kong – and 78 per cent knew executives thinking of leaving because of the environment.
