THE ARMADA SETS SAIL – 29TH ROLEX MIDDLE SEA RACE UNDERWAY
October 18, 2008
Even in light wind the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race is something special. The excitement builds with every shattering crack of the howitzers used to signal the class starts. By the time of the fifth and final start of the day the crowd assembled on both shores of Marsamxett Harbour and the spectator fleet were at fever pitch. Sandwiched between the 16th century bastions of Valletta and the 18th century Fort Manoel, the start line is in the most confined space imaginable. Every foot of space is fought for in earnest. For the seventy-seven boats that embarked on the 29th edition of the race, it WAS an adrenalin-pumping environment.
Surprisingly given the feeble north-westerly wind that presented itself this morning, all but one start got away cleanly. Probably less surprising is that it was the 100-foot Rapture, the biggest yacht in the fleet, that fluffed her lines finding herself half a boat length over. The gunfire must have seemed like an admonishment to her nineteen crew. She was lucky to be in a start of eight rather than the twenty-seven boat first start, when she might have struggled to find a way back across the line.
The first start took an age to unfold. Airmalta Falcon (MLT) with 16-year old Matthew Scicluna at the helm got the best of a congested line finding a clean zephyr over by the less favoured Valletta shore. While a pile-up looked to be occurring in front of the masses gathered on the steps beneath the Royal Malta Yacht Club, the youngster calmly got on with his business and looked odds on to be first out of the harbour. As it was Spirit of Ad Hoc (FRA) skippered by Thierry Bouchard threw the dice a little better and was first round the mark laid at the entrance to the harbour, leading the yachts off up the northern coast of Malta to the final turning mark in St Paul’s Bay. Spirit of Ad Hoc was followed out by Vae Victis (ITA), Aziza (MLT), Airmalta Falcon and Belka (CZE). Bouchard held his nerve and lead all the way to St Paul’s even holding off the big boats to round first again. Spirit of Ad Hoc was soon thereafter overtaken, but the French crew will have lifted their spirits with their initial performance.
Start two looked to be getting away with fewer problems, but once again those at the Fort Manoel committee end of the line found themselves caught with barely enough wind to move. Jonas Diamentino would have been pleased with his new boat Gasan Mamo Comanche Raider II when seemingly from nowhere he popped out of the start and lifted off. Meanwhile, Tim Camilleri had a start to forget after getting himself caught windless under the towering St Andrew’s Bastion. Perhaps a misunderstanding with his largely Russian crew on Vikesha (MLT).
The third start featuring the TP52 RAN (GBR) of Niklas Zennstrom, of Skype fame, looked to be heading off into building breeze when the sun went behind a cloud and almost immediately the breeze shut down again. That said taller rigs, bigger sail plans soon paid off and British pro-crew on RAN with Tim Powell on the helm and Adrian Stead on tactics relatively tore off up the harbour. Bella Donna (ITA) also hit the line at speed, whilst Claudio Amendola’s Acaia Cube (ITA) copied her smaller sisters in previous starts by getting stuck over by the Club and took a while to get going.
Come the fourth start, the wind had picked up again. Jim Swartz’s Moneypenny (USA) with Gavin Brady and Francesco de Angelis in the afterguard was mid-line with Andre Soriano’s Allegre (GBR), which has Stuart Childerley in the crew, and these two ripped up the track, with Roger Sturgeon’s Rosebud/Team DYT left floundering in their wake trying to find their groove. Sturgeon’s crew, with Maltese talent Christian Ripard amongst its number for this race, would have preferred a cleaner start, however they won the 2007 Rolex Sydney Hobart and did not achieve that by letting the odd setback keep them on their heels for long. At 1730 CET Rosebud/Team DYT is just behind Moneypenny and Alegre some twenty-miles south of Capo Passero at the southernmost tip of Sicily. These three are trucking along at a respectable 9-11 knots in less than 10 knots of westerly.
RAN lies in fourth place on the water, with David Frank’s Strait Dealer (MLT) the first of the local boats at the head of the bulk of the fleet approximately ten-miles behind the front-runners. Spirit of Ad Hoc also remains in the leading part of the chasing peloton. Another yacht to look out for is the Austrian yacht Sarah Key which arrived in Malta late this morning. Whilst skipper Aegyd Peng completed the paperwork ashore his crew provisioned the boat. They made the start with minutes to spare. The Croatian Geisha lies in last place on the water, but having started much almost an hour and quarter behind her class compatriots she could be excused this. In the multihull division, Silver Chiller (GER) and High Q1 (GER) are neck and neck.
The wind is predicted to go very light this evening which will present a new set of problems to the crews as they try to work their way up the eastern seaboard of Sicily - the question taxing the navigators and strategists right now is whether to set up to stay inshore or to go offshore. For those not wanting to follow events all night on the tracking page of the event website, tomorrow morning will reveal who made the right call and who did not.

UK & Netherlands. Yacht Leg & Cradle Company to introduce Boat Dolly at METS
Announcing the new product, Managing Director Paul Williams said "With the increase in demands from insurance companies for properly designed and engineered cradle storage for all boats, a number of our customers asked us to look into the development of a cost-effective Motor Boat Dolly which can safely store a boat, but can also be moved around a paved area or showroom without the need for a full trailer. This makes moving vessels far easier and be more flexible than trailers. It also means in the tight surrounds of most sales showrooms the Motor Boat Dolly can actually save a considerable amount of space."
The new Motor Boat Dolly can be easily stored when not in use and being fully galvanised requires virtually no maintenance. A pair of Dollies will carry up to 4 tons displacement. Rubber pads are fitted to fully protect the hull.
The Yacht Leg and Cradle Company has designed the Dolly system to be easily transportable for multiple delivery. The new Motor Boat Dolly can be seen for the first time at METS Amsterdam from November 18th.
UK. Sealine pulls out of London Boat Show
Sealine will be supporting its international dealer network at the key shows in Düsseldorf, Moscow, Cannes, Southampton, Genoa and Barcelona and as a result has made the decision not to attend the 2009 London Boat Show.
Commenting on the decision Steve Coultate, Managing Director of Sealine said: “Sealine will be staging a number of exciting customer based activities during this winter period, details of which will be released shortly. We will of course continue to work very closely with the British Marine Federation and will be exhibiting our full range of luxury motor boats, as well as launching new product, at the 2009 Southampton Boat Show in September.”

Seth IFDS Multihull World Championship
Seth Cascais Worlds 2008 - World Championship IFDS Challenger Class, which takes place between Wednesday and Saturday, started Tuesday with the Practice Race . The strong wind was the dominant factor, and Bento Amaral, the first Portuguese Sailor to qualify for the Paralympics Games Sailing event, classified in 9th position.
It was a special day for the 28th sailors from 12 countries who are in Cascais. The first day was difficult due to strong winds, but all the sailors were happy with the event.
Bento Amaral, who with Antonio Santos and Bruno Pereira, defends the Portuguese colours, was happy with the Challenger Trimaran: the boat is spectacular and is very demanding for of the sailors physically. There are several controls which I can’t manage correctly, but we are working on some modifications.”
Diana Campbell is the person behind the Challeger trimaran. This Englishwoman, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair from the age of seven, loved sailing. In the sixties, Diana purchased a catamaran and from that concept, asked Rod Macalpine Downey to design a boat specifically for handicapped sailors that would be fast fun and safe to sail. The first Challenger was built in 1980 by Cheesman Rollo & Co and sponsored by the RYA Seamanship Foundation.
The Seth Cascais Worlds 2008 is a continuation of the successful programme for disabled sailing called Vela Sem Limites which started in 2005 and is a joint programme between the Clube Naval de Cascais, the Camara Municipal de Cascais and Cercica. It provides continuous sailing throughout the year for the disabled of Cascais council, providing an open air activity with therapeutic benefits for all.

Red Dragon's maiden voyage
Captain Ben Marshall sent a brief email from the Seychelles:
“We had a very fast, safe and good trip from Auckland stopping at Bali to refuel and the Chagos Archipelago for a quick dive and then on to Mahe in the Seychelles for a photo shoot and to pick the owners up for an 11 day trip.”
From the Seychelles, Red Dragon was bound for Turkey, via the Red Sea. For this passage, through an area marked by security concerns and political issues, Red Dragon took on additional crew highly trained to protect people and property in all circumstances.
Red Dragon will spend the Northern summer in the Mediterranean and the owners have kindly agreed to allow Alloy Yachts to show the boat at the Monaco Boat Show in September.
Red Dragon is a 52m (170ft) sloop designed by Dubois Naval Architects for European owners, Guy and Myriam Ullens. She has a contemporary interior designed by French architects Wilmotte & Associates. She was built in aluminium by Alloy Yachts and delivered in February this year.
Alloy Yachts Vessel Receives Major International Award
VvS1 is an expedition style motoryacht designed by Greg Marshall and built for New Zealand businessman, Michael Hill and his wife, Christine. Mr and Mrs Hill attended the glittering award ceremony in Venice, Italy and were on hand to receive the award.
Since launching, VvS1 has been on an extremely busy schedule exploring through the South Pacific, both for private use and on charter.
"Naturally, we are delighted to receive this recognition," said Alloy Yachts Managing Director Tony Hambrook. "VvS1 has been an enjoyable project and we are delighted to see the owners deriving so much pleasure from it. The motoryacht is used extensively and reflects the energy and enthusiasm of the owners."
"We pride ourselves on producing yachts of world-class quality and it is gratifying that these awards confirm our ability to compete in the world market. VvS1 was up against some very stiff competition in its category, so this recognition is very pleasing."
Founded in 1985, Alloy Yachts builds custom aluminium sailing and motor yachts from 30m to 68m. Currently under construction are two large sailing vessels, Mondango, a 52m ketch, and Kokomo, a 58m sloop, as well as a 40m motoryacht. In February this year, Alloy delivered Red Dragon, a 52m sloop, which is currently on its maiden passage to the Seychelles, bound for the Mediterranean.

ALLOY YACHTS LAUNCHES 52m KETCH
Alloy Yachts has launched its latest superyacht, the 52m (170ft) flybridge ketch, Mondango, built for an international businessman and his wife. Mondango is a Dubois Naval Architects design. The hull, which is finished in Majestic Blue, is similar to the recent Red Dragon, but the ketch configuration makes the yacht distinctive.
The superstructure, in Matterhorn White, extends further aft, creating a large cockpit area. The side windows and the curved rear window of the cockpit open and close at the touch of a button allowing the cockpit to be climate controlled, or open to the sea breeze.
The interior design by Reymond Langton features contemporary styling utilizing oak and macassar ebony timbers.
Mondango is the fifth yacht over 50m built by Alloy Yachts. She has a beam of 10.2m (33.5ft), draws 4.9m (16.1ft) and a displacement of 350 tonnes. She is built to Lloyds Classification and the Large Commercial Yacht Code LY2.
Mondango was launched in the traditional way with champagne across the bow and then made its way under the control of two tugs from the yard to the Viaduct Basin. In the following weeks, the carbon fibre Southern Spars masts were stepped and engine and sailing trials were undertaken.
Sails are by North Sails and are handled by 18 captive and eight vertical winches, all of which were designed and built by Alloy Yachts. The triple headsails furl on Reckmann furlers.
The main engine is a 3412D 1200hp caterpillar and she is fitted with two 90kw Northern Lights generators.

Baltic Yachts create a Mega Cruising Yacht - The Baltic 141'
One important factor in a project like this is a very good and close co-operation between naval architect, interior designer stylist and the boat yard. Based on the experience so far we are confident that the "team" that was involved in this project was second to none.
Together with the owners, naval architect judel/vrolijk & co and interior designer John Munford plus our own in-house design team, R&J Design we made this project something really outstanding.
Designers' Comments - judel/vrolijk & co & John Munford
judel/vrolijk & co
Before we started to design the preliminary drawings for this project, we decided to investigate the design parameters for such a big performance cruiser. The concept for this boat was to find the optimum numbers for a high performance cruiser combined with zero compromise for comfort.
This was not an easy task and we had to do our homework first. The main speed factors to consider were the sailarea, length, hull shape, draft, weight and stability.
We were aware that a yacht of this size would have all the necessary systems on board like Water makers. Generators, Air conditioners, Hydraulics, Tenders etc. Therefore we started with a very accurate weight study for this part and looked into the possibilities to reduce weight where possible and also into ways to simplify the systems.
Now that we had fixed the weight and C.G. for this part, the next study was to decide on the construction method. Baltic Yachts have always been on the leading end of technology and would be able to build the most exotic construction. We had to balance the weight advantage against cost and performance and come up with a construction that was better than most yachts built in composite materials. Together with Baltic Yachts we decided to go for a sandwich cored hull with outside skins of mainly of Aramid (Kevlar) fibers and an inside skin of carbon fiber. As core material foam and balsa core was to be used depending on the loads in different areas. The inside structure was to be in a carbon composite. Also for the interior high tech composite was to be used in areas where it would result in saving weight. After this study the basic weights were fixed, apart from the deck gear, mast, rigging, and ballast.
The next study was to decide on the hull shape versus performance. We did an extensive study with the help of CFD programs to evaluate the performance of such a yacht. We did several runs comparing the different concepts that would be possible in combination with a Beam-Length study.
First of all, we had the restrictions of depth, hence we had to look into different options. The first alternative was a shallow keel with a high displacement and high sailarea for which the upwind performance could be optimized with a lifting board integrated in the Bulb/Fin geometry.
The second concept was a swinging or lifting keel with a draft limitation because of the structural or interior layouts. And the third one was a swinging keel configuration. In the end we had at least 100 different configurations that we had to evaluate with the help of our in-house VPP and CFD programs.
Before we decided on the final numbers and concept we had to decide together with the owners and the captain for which conditions the concept should be optimized. Many questions had to be answered, like where the boat will sail in the next years. What time of the year will the boat be where?
How much heel will be acceptable for such a big yacht? Is the sail area a limitation on sail area? How big will the crew need to be for maneuvering the yacht? What will be the full and half load conditions? All these answers together gave us a matrix by which we could then finally decide on a concept that would fulfill most of the owner's wishes.
The final concept is a lifting keel configuration with minimum draft of 3.5 meters and when the keel is fully down the draft will be 5.85 meters. The lead bulb will be approximately 50 tons and the board will be founded out of high tensile steel. This concept will have a very high stability in combination with a small wetted surface. Compared to other yachts in the same size the displacement will be at least 20 tons less with more or less the same sailarea. We are aware that such an arrangement with a lifting keel will need a very solid construction, but with the help of SP technologies that are performing the structural studies and are also running FEM models, we are convinced that the yard will come up with a 100 per cent reliable solution.
The sailplan is very much in line with our resent thinking and has a non-overlapping 110% Jib and smaller furling Jib on an inner stay which 50% of the area of the big one. It is also intended to test a big furling Code zero genneker for very light reaching conditions. The mainsail area is relatively big and will have a furling boom system, this way the sailarea can be reduced depending on the conditions.
The performance of the yacht will reach new standards and the handling is comfortable. For a yacht with such high comfort, the sailing will be a real challenge. The owners intend to sail this boat all around the world in different stages and we are convinced that they will not be disappointed.
John Munford did the interior design and layout in co-operation with the Baltic Yachts design team. The arrangement has a big deckhouse with salon and U-sofa within the raised cabin, this gives a very open feeling. A mock-up of the interior was built by Baltic Yachts and was a big help to make the final adjustments to the interior, especially in the two level area, because the cabin height should be minimum. The final solution came out very well and we made sure that the helmsman could see the stem of the boat looking over the cabin.
The styling of the exterior and hull is called "Timeless" within our group. Even after 10 years this yacht will still be beautiful and not outdated. In combination with a love for detail of Baltic Yachts and the interior of John Munford Design this yacht is a real eye catcher.
INTERIOR STYLIST'S COMMENTS
John Munford
This powerful 42m sloop designed by Judel/Vrolijk is built at Baltic Yachts for a very experienced consortium requiring speed and comfort. John Munford Design was delighted to be involved with such well proven naval architects and builders where performance and exacting lightweight construction and style are the ultimate goals.
The interior is simply, classically styled with mahogany raised and fielded paneling and detailed cabinetry embodying the functions and comforts of the yacht. The interior reflects light, warmth and detail surrounding the practicalities of the accommodation and emitting a spacious airiness of the mezzanine decked saloon. The raised navigation and casual dining area give ideal panoramic views, whereas the forward lowered area gives a lofty cosseted environment for dining and relaxed seating. The lower deck aft contains the owner's suite together with a twin guest cabin and captain's cabin with a navigation area having close access to the helm. Forward of the saloon the double and twin guest cabin are cleverly integrated giving separation to the four crew and galley forward.
This is a stylish yachtsman's yacht for powerful sailing with the family.

CRYSTAL BALL - The Future is here!
Like with any yacht contract of Blohm + Voss, further details of the contract will be strictly confidential. The contract underlines the strengthened dedication of Blohm + Voss to Mega Yacht building.
We have always enjoyed a close, fruitful working spirit with the world’s premier designers, naval architects and interior stylists. These peers names list is long and includes amongst others, Cox and Stevens, Ceasar Pinnau, Terrance Disdale, Andrew Winch, Martin Francis, J.F. Platou, Luigi Sturchio, Tim Heywood, Philippe Starck, New Cruise, Espen Oino, Paolo Scanu, Hermidas Atabeyki and Donald Starkey.
Building a L-XXXL yacht is a hugely creative interactive process between the client, designers, engineers, the yard and countless sub-suppliers. The yard acts as the system integrator, delivering a turnkey ready-to-go work of art. CAD/CAM systems speed up and smoothen the industrial side of production. Virtual reality 3D-software gives the future owner and his teams insight into every detail and every space long before the vessel is ever built.
Martin Francis designed the radically modern ECO well ahead of contemporary design thinking already in 1991. His vision for the 140 m (459 ft) CRYSTAL BALL with its translucent glass superstructure and stand-alone helipad is yet again decades ahead of its time.
